Black History Month: Louis Southworth

Today, I want to talk about Louis Southworth. Louis was brought to Oregon from Tennessee as a slave, and lived in Oregon as a slave for many years, until he was able to buy his freedom.

He then started a homestead on the Alsea River where he eventually ran a sawmill and ferry which provided essential services for the community, and donated land for a school to be built in Alsea.
